Raigarh, Chhattisgarh: Two of four suspects accused of assaulting a woman constable during anti-mining unrest were arrested on Friday. The arrests were based on video footage showing the attack, in which the constable is seen pleading for mercy as she slumps to the ground.
The arrested duo, Mangal Rathiya and Chinesh Khamari, residents of Aamgaon village, have been charged with:
Attempted murder
Using criminal force on a woman
Outraging her modesty
Grievous assault on a public servant
Preventing her from performing official duties
Both are currently in judicial custody. Raigarh SP Divyang Patel said police are reviewing video footage and other digital evidence to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects.
The incident occurred at Libra Chowk, Raigarh, on December 27, 2025, amid unrest in a cluster of 14 villages protesting mining operations.
Chhattisgarh PCC president Deepak Baij demanded strict legal action, stating that the attack on a woman in uniform reflects public anger against police and the state government over alleged administrative failures.
