Rahul Lakhera Arrested in Multi-State Cyber Fraud Racket

Ex-convict Rahul Lakhera masterminded call centre scam

Rahul Lakhera (28), previously convicted in a murder case, was arrested on Thursday by Delhi police for his involvement in a sprawling multi-state cyber fraud racket. During his four-year jail term, Rahul learned the tricks of the cybercrime trade from notorious criminal Nawab Khan, who is still absconding.

Rahul and his associate Vikas Kumar, also 28, were apprehended from the Badarpur-Jaitpur area in South Delhi, where the police also uncovered an illegal call centre used to execute their fraudulent operations.

According to DCP South, Nipun Agarwal, Rahul was convicted in 2019 for the murder of a property dealer in Haryana’s Surajkund area and sentenced to four years imprisonment. While in prison, Rahul was mentored by Nawab Khan, a wanted cybercriminal with cases pending in Faridabad and Noida.

Convinced that cybercrime was a safer option, Rahul handled 50% of the racket’s profits and coordinated closely with Nawab. The gang employed malicious APK files to hack victims’ phones, stealing OTPs, credit card details, and other sensitive data. Much of this data was sourced from a Bihar-based seller known as ‘Dubeji’ for as little as Rs 10 per person.

Additional DCP Vasanth Rallapalli stated that the stolen data was used to place fraudulent online orders—primarily for mobile phones—which were then sold at discounted prices in the grey market. The illegal call centre operated out of Vikas Kumar’s residence, where staff, including women, were paid Rs 15,000 monthly to cold-call victims while impersonating bank officials.

The case came to light after a Lucknow resident lost Rs 1.6 lakh to a similar scam and lodged a complaint at Sarojininagar police station. Following investigations, the police traced the fraud back to Delhi and conducted a raid on August 6.

A case has been registered under the IT Act and relevant sections of the BNS Act, with further investigations underway.
