PIACENZA, ITALY – Emanuele Michieletti, the 60-year-old head of the radiology department at Piacenza Civil Hospitals, has been arrested on charges of aggravated sexual violence and stalking following a series of disturbing complaints from colleagues.
The arrest on May 8, 2025, comes after a doctor reported that Michieletti sexually assaulted her in his office after locking the door. The assault was interrupted by the arrival of another physician, and the incident prompted the Ausl of Emilia, the local health authority, to initiate a judicial investigation.
Authorities uncovered a disturbing pattern of behavior over the next 45 days, discovering 32 episodes of sexual violence and documenting psychological coercion, inappropriate gestures, and explicit sexual requests made by Michieletti toward multiple female colleagues. Hidden cameras and phone interceptions were used as part of the investigation, revealing that the actions were part of a systematic, predatory behavior.
The investigation also exposed a culture of silence, where victims, often in vulnerable positions, felt compelled to comply with Michieletti’s demands for fear of professional retaliation. Colleagues reportedly suggested ways to avoid or navigate his behavior, further perpetuating a cycle of abuse.
In addition to the sexual violence, the investigation also revealed allegations of stalking, with Michieletti summoning some of his victims via the hospital loudspeaker, which caused significant emotional distress.
Ester Pasetti, from the Anaao regional association, and Filippo Anelli, president of Fnomceo, have both called for increased awareness and action regarding sexual harassment in healthcare, urging victims to come forward without fear.
Michieletti, originally from Vercelli, was a respected physician and often contributed to scientific publications. His arrest has sent shockwaves through the local community, with professional associations pushing for more robust measures to ensure a safe working environment for all healthcare workers.
There are currently ten formal complaints against Michieletti, but authorities believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. The Ausl of Piacenza is exploring possible civil action as part of its ongoing response to the case.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by women in the workplace, particularly in healthcare settings, where power dynamics can exacerbate the risks of harassment. As the investigation continues, it is expected to have significant ramifications for hospital policies and practices moving forward.
