SCOTTSBURG, Ind. (WISH) — A Scott County deputy uncovered a string of thefts after reports of missing jewelry and cash pointed to a local cleaning lady as the suspect.
Rachelle R. Smith of Scottsburg has been arrested for multiple thefts and drug-related offenses, according to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation began on May 2, when deputies responded to a report of missing valuables at a home. The residents, who had recently hired a cleaning company in April, noticed cash and jewelry had disappeared.
The deputy quickly identified the stolen items and traced them back to Smith. A search of her home revealed more stolen jewelry and illegal drugs. Investigators say Smith is linked to similar thefts across southern Indiana — all involving homes she was hired to clean.
Smith is now facing eight charges, including four felonies.
