The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) has arrested 28-year-old Quashaun Freeman of Bolton in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on May 27 in Riegelwood.

Deputies responded to a call on Brown Town Road, where they discovered Jonathan Baldwin, 31, of Clarkton, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center by Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire Rescue, but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

According to Sheriff Bill Rogers, an investigation revealed that the shooting followed a verbal altercation between the two men. Freeman allegedly opened fire on Baldwin during the dispute.

Freeman was arrested earlier this week at an apartment complex in Raleigh, where deputies also recovered a firearm and ammunition.

“This is a time of overwhelming grief,” Sheriff Rogers stated. “Our hearts are with Mr. Baldwin’s family and loved ones. I have personally met with them to offer my condolences.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials say additional charges may be forthcoming.
