The Punjab Police have successfully busted a trans-border drug cartel, leading to the arrest of four traffickers and the seizure of 5.06 kg of heroin in two separate cases. The arrested individuals have been identified as Gurjant Singh, alias Kalu (from Bachiwind village, Amritsar), Jagjit Singh (from Rania village, Amritsar), Sahil Kumar (from Ghariyala village, Tarn Taran), and Rinku (from Basti Dune Wali, Guru Har Sahai, Ferozepur).
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav confirmed that the traffickers were in direct contact with Pakistan-based drug smugglers, who were using drones to smuggle narcotics across the border. These drugs were further distributed to various areas of Amritsar.
Two FIRs have been registered under the NDPS Act at the Cantonment and Sadar Amritsar police stations.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar shared details of the first case, stating that the police arrested Gurjant Kalu and Jagjit Singh from the Mahal bypass area and seized 3.067 kg of heroin from them.
In another operation, the CIA Staff-1, led by Inspector Amolakdeep Singh, arrested Sahil Kumar and Rinku, seizing an additional 2 kg of heroin. These individuals had been active in the drug trade for over a year.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Jagjit Singh had returned from Italy and was facing a previous drug peddling case. He was also wanted by the Amritsar Rural Police for the recovery of 5 kg of heroin on January 14, 2024. Furthermore, it was found that Rinku was involved in running a large hawala network, facilitating illegal transfers of drug trade money to different suppliers.
