West Bengal Police have arrested Bengali film producer Prosenjit Ranjan Nath in connection with a Rs36 lakh investment fraud. Previously a software engineer, Nath was found to have received nearly half the defrauded amount in his personal bank account, confirming his direct involvement.
The fraud began a few years ago via a replica mobile application mimicking a popular investment platform. The victim discovered the app through a Facebook ad and was added to a WhatsApp group where members promised high stock market returns. Fabricated success stories convinced the complainant to invest.
Over several months, the complainant invested Rs36 lakh, encouraged by virtual high returns displayed on the app. Suspicion arose when withdrawal attempts repeatedly failed.
After filing a complaint at a North 24 Parganas cyber police station, the Kolkata High Court transferred the investigation to the CID. During the probe, officials traced Rs18 lakh of the stolen funds directly to Nath’s bank account.
CID confirmed Nath’s involvement through app analysis and scientific evidence. Nath was arrested from the Alipore area in Kolkata. Authorities are investigating other suspects and conducting raids.
