In a major cash theft case, a 27-year-old employee of Hitachi Cash Management Services Pvt Ltd, Dhanraj Bhoir, was arrested for stealing Rs1.91 crore by manipulating cash replenishments at automated teller machines (ATMs) in Navi Mumbai. The crime took place between February 26 and June 30, 2025.
Bhoir, a resident of Panvel, was responsible for refilling currency notes at 16 ATMs across Kalamboli, Kamothe, and Kharghar. Police revealed that he systematically stole money by under-filling the cash at one ATM during each visit. For example, if Rs4 lakh was to be loaded, he would deposit only Rs3 lakh, pocketing the remaining Rs1 lakh.
The theft came to light when the agency conducted an internal audit and noticed discrepancies in the cash replenished at these locations. Following the audit, the Kalamboli police registered a case against Bhoir, who was arrested from his residence.
During interrogation, Bhoir confessed to the theft. Police are currently investigating whether he had any accomplices. A court has remanded him in police custody for five days as the probe continues.
Senior Inspector Rajendra Kote of Kalamboli police said, “The accused managed to avoid detection by stealing from only one ATM at a time, making the losses less noticeable.”
