VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) — Alejandro Marroquin, a 46-year-old principal with the Visalia Unified School District, was arrested this week on felony vandalism charges, according to the Visalia Police Department.

Police responded Monday to a report of vandalism on West Hurley Avenue, where they arrested Marroquin for allegedly damaging a vehicle belonging to someone he had a previous domestic relationship with.

Legal analyst and attorney Kevin Little explained that while vandalism can be charged as either a misdemeanor or a felony, the latter typically involves more extensive property damage.

“The fact that he was arrested on a felony suggests the damage was significant,” Little said.

According to the Mt. Whitney High School website, Marroquin serves as the school’s principal. The school district and its board members have declined to comment on the incident.

Community members expressed concern about the arrest, particularly given Marroquin’s role as an educator and leader.

“It’s important that we comport ourselves to set an example, especially when working with children,” Little added. “Faculty members can face consequences beyond the criminal process.”

Under California Education Code, individuals convicted of violent or serious felonies are barred from public school employment. For non-violent felonies, individuals must demonstrate rehabilitation through clear and convincing evidence after at least one year. However, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing has the authority to revoke credentials independently of the court outcome.

“I’ve had clients cleared in court who still lost their credentials,” Little noted, emphasizing the seriousness of the commission’s oversight.

The Tulare County District Attorney’s Office is currently reviewing the case and awaiting the final police report before deciding on formal charges.
