Prime Suspect Arrested in Murder of Kirinyaga University Student ‘Akoko the Billionaire’

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday apprehended Brian Otieno Maurice, the prime suspect in the murder of Sospeter Osunga, a fourth-year Kirinyaga University student known as ‘Akoko the Billionaire.’ Osunga was tragically killed on November 18 following a violent altercation in Kibera, Nairobi.

Following extensive investigations, three individuals were initially detained, providing crucial information that led authorities to Maurice. He will be arraigned in court on December 9.

According to the DCI, Osunga was attacked by a gang of assailants in the Ayani area, where he sustained fatal wounds believed to have been inflicted with a sharp object. The incident unfolded after a confrontation between Osunga’s group and a group of bodaboda riders.

Reports indicate that Osunga had traveled to Kibera after receiving an invitation from a friend. He arrived with a man and a woman and reportedly offered drinks to everyone at a local joint before moving to another venue, where a popular Ohangla musician was performing. It was here that the violent confrontation occurred.

The altercation reportedly stemmed from something Osunga said, which angered the bodaboda riders. The fight escalated, leading to Osunga being hacked by a mob. His female companion was injured but managed to escape, and his driver later informed the police of the tragic event.

Osunga, who frequently flaunted his lavish lifestyle on social media, had been known for his extravagant nights out and travels. His death came just months after another Kirinyaga University student, Dennis Oduor Otieno, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Mombasa.

As investigations continue, Maurice is expected to face charges in connection to the fatal attack on Osunga.
