The Crime Branch Unit 1 of the Nashik City Police arrested two youths — Prathamesh Ushir (22) of Upnagar and Joel Mhaske (19) of Jail Road, Nashik Road — for allegedly robbing an elderly woman’s gold chain in the Panchavati area on September 11.
The accused approached the victim’s flat under the pretense of asking for drinking water, then snatched her 10.6 grams gold chain valued at Rs1.1 lakh. The robbery was captured on a CCTV camera installed on the second floor of the woman’s building.
Following directions from Police Commissioner Sandeep Karnik, crime branch officers launched a prompt investigation. Led by Senior Inspector Madhukar Kad, the team reviewed CCTV footage, identifying a moped used by the suspects to track and flee the crime scene.
A tip-off later led the police to spot the same moped in the Upnagar–Jail Road area, where a trap was laid, resulting in the arrest of both accused.
Initially providing misleading statements, both youths later confessed to the crime. They admitted that they committed the robbery to recover financial losses from stock market trading.
The police recovered the stolen gold, as well as the moped valued at Rs80,000, used during the robbery. The case has now been transferred to the Panchavati Police Station for further investigation.
