The Crime Branch Unit-6 has arrested two individuals from Powai for allegedly tampering with IMEI numbers of mobile phones and selling stolen or untraceable devices from a local repair shop.
Following a tip-off received by PSI Dhootraj on September 19, officials conducted a sting operation targeting Ram Mobile Service Centre at Shop No. 08, Tungagaon, Saki Vihar Road, Powai.
A decoy customer approached the shop, where the accused Gulam Rasool Rashid Khan (21), a mobile mechanic, used illegal software tools to change the IMEI number of a handset. His employer, Ramprasad Sargun Rajbhar (37), the shop owner, was also found complicit in the operation.
During interrogation, the duo confessed to using the “Unlock Tool” via Google Chrome to alter IMEI numbers — a serious violation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the IT Act. The Powai Police registered CR No. 991/2025 under Sections 336(2), 336(3), 340(2), 3(5) of the BNS, along with Section 65 of the IT Act.
The accused were presented before the 37th Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, Mumbai, and have been remanded to police custody until September 23.
The case is now under deeper investigation by PI Sushant Sawant, while the initial operation was executed under Senior PI Bharat Ghone, PSI Dhootraj, and their Unit-6 team.
