In a shocking case of infanticide, a 30-year-old woman named Poonam Shah, originally from West Bengal, has been arrested by Palghar Police in Maharashtra for allegedly murdering her newborn daughter shortly after delivery.
According to Inspector Dadasaheb Gutookhade of Dahanu police station, Poonam had travelled to her parents’ home in Lonipada for childbirth. Reportedly, she was distressed after delivering a fourth daughter, leading to the tragic decision.
The incident occurred on Saturday night at a government hospital, where Poonam allegedly strangled the infant girl. Suspicious staff members alerted the authorities after suspecting that the baby’s death was not natural.
Following an inquiry, an FIR was registered under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Poonam was taken into custody.
