In a significant drug bust, Cottonpet police arrested seven individuals involved in a large-scale ganja smuggling racket, seizing 53.5 kilograms of ganja valued at Rs40 lakh. The accused, identified as Shankarlal Ajay (38), Anirudd Dalai Sonu (38), Basant Kumar (35), Ajit Kumar Singh Vipul Bhai (43), Deepak Kumar Deepak Mehta (27), and Amarnath Jaiswal Mishra (61), were apprehended along with nine mobile phones, ten SIM cards, and a goods autorickshaw used to transport the drugs.
The operation began on July 13 when police intercepted an autorickshaw carrying the contraband based on credible intelligence. Two suspects were arrested on the spot, and subsequent investigations led to the arrests of the remaining accused, who confessed to smuggling ganja from Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, using private buses and cargo services to Bengaluru.
After receiving the drug consignments, the gang would conceal the ganja inside readymade garment packages, forge fake GST documents, and transport the shipments to Delhi and other metropolitan areas based on demand.
Police officials revealed that the accused maintain an extensive network across India’s major metro cities. Investigations continue to dismantle their operations.
All accused have been booked under the NDPS Act and are currently in police custody as authorities work to unravel their trafficking network.
