PHUKET, Thailand — Police arrested a Thai man after he allegedly beat his wife to death with a broomstick inside their rented room in Phuket on December 16–17.

Authorities from Mueang Phuket Police Station were alerted after medical staff at Mission Hospital Phuket reported a 51-year-old woman, identified as Kai, in critical condition from severe injuries believed to be caused by domestic violence. Despite urgent treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU), Kai later died.

Police went to the couple’s accommodation in Soi Kingkaew 9, Ratsada sub-district, where they found Kai’s husband, 54-year-old Nuek, appearing intoxicated. During questioning, Nuek confessed to assaulting his wife with a broomstick after an argument while they had been drinking alcohol the night before. He admitted to losing control and repeatedly attacking her, then going to sleep without seeking medical help.

The following morning, Nuek reportedly noticed Kai was unconscious with visible bruises and called emergency services. He left for work afterward and later returned to the scene.

Investigators seized a broken broomstick from the bedroom, believed to be the weapon used in the assault, and collected additional forensic evidence. Neighbors told police the couple frequently argued when intoxicated and that physical assaults had occurred multiple times in the past, with Kai sometimes fleeing to nearby homes for help.

Nuek has been charged under Section 290 of Thailand’s Criminal Law for physically assaulting another person resulting in death. The offense carries a prison sentence ranging from three to 15 years.
