A man in Autauga County, Alabama, has been arrested after firing multiple shots at a medical helicopter responding to an emergency call, injuring a flight nurse onboard.
According to authorities, 48-year-old Peter Ellison mistook the medical helicopter for a drone and opened fire around 4:20 a.m. near County Road 51, where volunteer firefighters had set up a landing zone.
Gunfire struck the right-side window of the helicopter, and a ricochet injured a flight nurse. Deputies, who were already en route to assist, quickly gathered information and located Ellison, who was taken into custody along with his firearm.
Ellison is charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle. The injured nurse was treated at the scene, and the original patient was transported to the hospital by ambulance instead of helicopter.
The FBI and FAA have taken over the investigation, and Ellison may face federal charges related to the incident.
