by Ananya Mehta

Patna police have busted a newborn baby trafficking gang operating across several states, rescuing a kidnapped infant and arresting five people, including two women and a nurse. The case came to light after a complaint was filed on May 7 about the abduction of a newborn by two women working with three men in the Malsalami police station area of Patna City.

Patna City SDPO II, Nikhil Kumar, disclosed that within 24 hours of receiving the complaint, the police arrested the suspects and recovered the child. “Renu Kumar, Anita Devi, and Vijay Kumar were caught near Patna Sahib railway station while attempting to flee. Rs 60,000 was recovered from them, and an additional Rs 2 lakh was found at Renu’s residence in Mithapur,” Kumar said. “Shobha Devi, a nurse, along with Shashi Jaiswal, was arrested from Kankarbagh.”

The entire trafficking syndicate has been identified, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend others involved. The gang allegedly targeted newborns near hospitals, abducting them to sell for large sums. This follows a similar racket recently dismantled in Phulwarisharif. Police believe a wider child trafficking network remains active around Patna.
