In a major breakthrough, Patna police have busted a trafficking ring allegedly involved in the kidnapping and sale of newborn babies across multiple states. A kidnapped infant was successfully rescued, and five individuals, including a nurse and two women, were arrested within 24 hours of the complaint.
The investigation began after a complaint was filed on May 7, reporting that an infant had been abducted by two women in collusion with three men in the Malsalami police station area of Patna City.
Patna City SDPO II, Nikhil Kumar, confirmed on Saturday that a swift operation led to the rescue of the child and the arrest of the key suspects. “Renu Kumar, Anita Devi, and Vijay Kumar were intercepted near Patna Sahib railway station while attempting to flee. Rs 60,000 was recovered from them at the spot, and an additional Rs 2 lakh was seized from Renu’s house in Mithapur,” Kumar said.
Police also arrested Shobha Devi, a nurse, from Kankarbagh along with another accomplice, Shashi Jaiswal. The accused confessed to being part of an organized syndicate that abducted newborns from hospital vicinities to sell them for large sums of money.
According to officials, the gang operated strategically around hospitals in Patna and neighboring districts, targeting families in vulnerable conditions. A similar child trafficking racket was earlier dismantled in Phulwarisharif, indicating the presence of a broader, more coordinated network.
Efforts are underway to apprehend more individuals linked to the ring as the investigation deepens.
