Punjab Police’s State Cyber Crime Police Station has arrested Paramjit Singh, a resident of Kharar, Mohali, for defrauding at least 23 individuals across five states. Singh allegedly posted fake rental advertisements on OLX, promising attractive deals on properties to lure victims.
After gaining the trust of potential renters using forged documents and images, he collected advance payments in the form of rent, security deposits, or registration fees through UPI and bank transfers, before cutting off all communication.
Investigations revealed that Singh used multiple bank accounts with Axis Bank, Central Bank of India, Yes Bank, and HDFC Bank to process these fraudulent transactions. The total loss caused by his scam is estimated at Rs5 lakh.
Inspector Daljeet Singh led the investigation based on complaints received via the Pratibimb portal of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), Ministry of Home Affairs. An FIR (No. 07 dated 10.06.2025) was registered under Sections 316(2) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 66D of the IT Act.
Authorities have warned the public to verify rental deals online and avoid sending advance payments without proper verification.
