The Panipat police have successfully busted a gang reportedly involved in robberies at gunpoint at liquor shops located along the national highways. The arrest was made after the accused, Sahil, a resident of Ganjbar village in Panipat, was detained on Saturday evening near the Samalkha grain market gate.
The gang is allegedly responsible for the robberies that took place on the night of March 27, where they looted Rs 2.53 lakh from two liquor shops located along NH-44. One shop was located near the Sector 29 bypass, and the other was situated between Samalkha and PattiKalyana.
Superintendent of Police Lokender Singh entrusted the investigation to Inspector Sumit Saroha, the Incharge of the Anti-Narcotic Cell, along with his team. During initial questioning, Sahil revealed that he was involved in the robbery along with three accomplices: Sukha from Khatik Basti, Farukh from Pratap Bazar, and Mohit from Murthal in Sonepat district.
Sahil disclosed that the four men had met in Panipat district jail, where they were all incarcerated in 2021 in connection with separate murder cases. After their release on bail a year ago, they formed a criminal gang.
Sahil further explained that on the night of March 27, he and Farukh were standing near an old bus stand when Sukha and Mohit arrived in a white Creta. The group then planned to rob the liquor shops. Mohit was reportedly armed with a pistol, and after removing the vehicle’s number plates, they carried out the robberies, stealing cash, mobile phones, and liquor bottles.
Inspector Saroha confirmed that three of Sahil’s associates — Sukha, Mohit, and Farukh — are still at large. Sahil was presented before the court and has been remanded to police custody for two days for further investigation.
It was also revealed that Mohit has a criminal background, with approximately 10 criminal cases filed against him.
