DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A Palm Tran employee, identified as Revenue Supervisor Dario Zurita, was arrested on Thursday for grand theft after he allegedly stole $2,500 from the company’s vault.
According to the Delray Beach Police Department (DBPD), the investigation began when an employee alerted Palm Tran officials about Zurita’s suspected involvement in the theft. Surveillance footage confirmed that Zurita had accessed the vault during money counts, a task that is not typically handled by supervisors.
Further review of the footage revealed Zurita entering the vault alone, with the door closed, which violated company procedures. He was later seen leaving the vault with a Palm Tran bag that appeared to be heavy, heading towards the employee-only parking lot. There, Zurita got into a Palm Tran van.
Officers arrived at the scene, located at 100 North Congress Avenue, and searched the van. They found a blue tote bag concealed under a sweater, containing $2,500 in single-dollar bills.
Zurita was arrested and taken to the police department for questioning. After being read his Miranda rights, he claimed he was collecting change for another Palm Tran location, though this procedure was not authorized by the company.
Based on the evidence, probable cause was established, and the 47-year-old was arrested and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on charges of grand theft.
