Police on Thursday arrested two convicted criminals who had escaped from the Pakur court premises after being convicted in a murder case a day earlier, officials said.
In a press statement, the office of the Pakur Superintendent of Police said a special raiding team was formed after a separate FIR was registered against the fugitives — Shivdhan Mohli and Noren Mohli — under Sections 262 and 263, read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), for resisting and obstructing lawful custody.
The two were arrested from Khariapara village under the Maheshpur police station in Pakur district and were subsequently sent to judicial custody.
According to the police, on January 7, four accused in a murder case registered at Amrapara police station surrendered before the court of the Additional Sessions Judge-1, Pakur. After the court pronounced its verdict and convicted all four, Shivdhan Mohli and Noren Mohli managed to escape from judicial custody.
Following the incident, the Pakur SP constituted a special raiding team. Acting on intelligence inputs and technical evidence, the team successfully tracked down and arrested the two fugitives within 24 hours.
A police official said the murder case dated back to January 12, 2019, when a person was killed during a clash over a land dispute.
After the escape, police reviewed CCTV footage, which revealed that the convicts fled through the back door of the courtroom and used a motorcycle to escape. They reportedly took advantage of lapses in security by police personnel deployed on lockup duty.
Further departmental action is likely to be initiated to address the security breach, police sources said.
