Steven Scott, a 36-year-old from Orlando, has been arrested for allegedly defrauding an Ormond Beach couple out of tens of thousands of dollars in a solar panel sales scam. The incident reportedly took place last year when Scott received $37,044 to install a solar system at the couple’s home but failed to provide the funds to his employer, the California-based company Powur PBC.
Scott was wanted for over a week before his arrest on December 31st. He faces charges of grand theft and organized scheme to defraud, both related to offenses involving amounts over $20,000. Scott was arrested at his Orlando home on New Year’s Eve and is being extradited to Volusia County. His bond was set at $40,000, and he remains in custody at the Volusia County Branch Jail as of Friday.
The crime allegedly took place in July, with the couple reporting it to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office in October. According to the report, Scott made the initial solar panel sale for a total of $77,063.40, with the couple making a down payment of $24,519.02. As the installation began, Scott allegedly collected another $37,044 in cash, claiming it was part of their scheduled payments.
The couple became suspicious when they received paperwork from Powur PBC that did not include the most recent payment to Scott. Attempts to contact him were unsuccessful, and Powur PBC informed the couple that they did not accept cash payments and that Scott was not authorized to collect money on behalf of the company.
