NEW CASTLE, Del. — A New Castle man, Omar Mendoza, 46, has been charged with vehicular homicide and several traffic violations following a crash on Route 40 in Bear that resulted in the death of a woman riding as a passenger on a motorcycle.
Delaware State Police report that Mendoza was driving eastbound on Pulaski Highway near Fir Avenue at around 10 a.m. on Sunday when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the cross-over. He then drove diagonally into the wrong lane, where his vehicle collided with a westbound motorcycle.
The impact threw both the motorcycle’s driver and passenger from the vehicle. Tragically, the 44-year-old female passenger from New Castle died at the scene. The 36-year-old man driving the motorcycle from Bear was hospitalized and is expected to survive.
Mendoza also required medical treatment before being taken into custody at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
He faces the following charges:
Vehicular Homicide Second Degree (Felony)
Driving Without a Valid License
Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign
Driving on the Wrong Side of the Roadway
Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device
Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
