Ohio Pair Arrested in Racine County for Vehicle Thefts and Credit Card Fraud
Racine County, WI – Two individuals from Columbus, Ohio, have been arrested in connection with a string of vehicle break-ins and credit card fraud in Union Grove and Mount Pleasant, the Racine County Sheriff’s Office announced this week.
The investigation began on September 21, 2025, when deputies responded to a report of a purse stolen from a vehicle on 67th Drive in Union Grove. A second theft occurred on September 24 on 57th Drive, also involving a stolen purse. In both cases, the victims’ credit cards were used at nearby businesses.
Using video surveillance and license plate reader technology, deputies identified a white Mazda 6 linked to the crimes. The vehicle was traced to 37-year-old Erica L. Mcelfresh and 42-year-old Jacob D. Brofford, both of Columbus. Authorities noted that Brofford has a criminal history involving vehicle break-ins.
On September 25, deputies located the Mazda at a hotel in Mount Pleasant. Mcelfresh was arrested at the scene for obstructing the investigation. A K9-assisted search of the hotel uncovered one of the stolen purses, clothing, and drug paraphernalia. Brofford was later found and taken into custody.
Brofford remains in the Racine County Jail on a $5,000 bond. He faces multiple charges, including theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Mcelfresh has been charged with obstruction and drug paraphernalia possession.
Sheriff Christopher Schmaling credited deputies and investigators for their use of technology and coordination in bringing the suspects to justice. Authorities continue to investigate whether the pair is connected to additional crimes in the area.
