In a significant move against rural corruption, the Odisha Vigilance Department has arrested Bhisma Raj Meher, former Panchayat Executive Officer (PEO) of Ranimunda Gram Panchayat, and Tukaram Hial, the current Sarpanch, for allegedly misappropriating government funds amounting to Rs14,24,722.
The funds, allocated under the 15th Central Finance Commission (CFC) and 6th State Finance Commission (SFC) grants, were meant for essential developmental works including drinking water supply and infrastructure projects during the financial years 2022–23 and 2023–24. However, Odisha Vigilance revealed that the proposed works were never executed.
Upon detailed verification, major discrepancies in fund utilization were uncovered, prompting arrests. The accused were produced before the Hon’ble Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, in Bhawanipatna.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials expect further revelations as scrutiny of records continues.
