Following a major explosives heist, Odisha Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), while the National Investigation Agency (NIA) launched a parallel probe. Investigations revealed the entire operation was meticulously planned from a house near the mine owned by George Munda, a local resident known for his long-standing opposition to the mine’s operations.
Seizing an opportunity to disrupt mining activities, Munda allegedly collaborated with Maoist groups, providing crucial intelligence about the arrival of explosives that facilitated the theft.
The recent arrest of George Munda marks a significant breakthrough for law enforcement, identifying him as a key informant and aide to the Maoists. Authorities have so far recovered over 3.8 tons of the stolen explosives near the Odisha-Jharkhand border, with ongoing efforts to retrieve the estimated remaining one ton.
This operation highlights the persistent threat of Maoist insurgency in the region and underscores the commitment of police and NIA to prevent such criminal activities.
Both agencies are intensifying efforts to track down other suspects involved in the heist and to stop the misuse of the stolen explosives.
