North Charleston, SC — Luis Oscar Ocanto, 38, wanted in connection with a homicide in North Charleston, was arrested Monday afternoon in Kingsland, Georgia, law enforcement officials confirmed.
Ocanto is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend at her apartment and then stealing her car, according to the North Charleston Police Department. He faces charges of murder and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Police said the case began on November 17, when officers conducted a welfare check at the apartment complex. They found the front door kicked in and the door frame on the ground. Upon reaching the back bedroom, officers discovered the door locked. After entering, they found a woman lying on the floor beside the bed, unresponsive and without a pulse. Ocanto was not present at the scene.
Ocanto was later located when a Kingsland Police officer stopped the stolen car for speeding on Interstate 95. A check of the license plate revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen from North Charleston. Further checks confirmed Ocanto was wanted for murder.
He is currently being held at the Camden County, Georgia jail while North Charleston detectives arrange extradition. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
