A criminal wanted in connection with the murder of a contractual roadways driver was arrested in the city early Thursday, police said.
The accused, 43-year-old Nooren, a resident of Mariyadeeh with a Rs 50,000 reward on his head, was located based on a tip-off. He was reportedly taking shelter at a building near the Beli Gav area when the police raided the location. During the raid, Nooren attempted to escape by jumping from the second floor, breaking his right leg, and was admitted to Colvin Hospital for treatment.
In a dramatic turn, Head Constable Vinod Dubey also jumped from the building while pursuing Nooren, sustaining serious injuries. He was hospitalized, and senior police officers have announced a Rs 50,000 cash reward for his bravery. Senior authorities are also expected to recommend a commendation disc for the constable.
A senior police official told TOI that the district police plan to invoke the Gangsters Act against Nooren and attach his properties. Nooren reportedly has four criminal cases pending across various police stations in the district.
Nooren and six accomplices are accused of murdering a contractual roadways bus driver near Mundera Mandi petrol pump on October 21. A total of seven criminals have been booked under sections 101(1), 352, 191(2)\3(5) of BNS, and section 3(2)(V) of the SC/ST Act. Six of the accused have already been arrested.
