On Sunday, Noida police arrested two individuals following a dramatic gunfight. The suspects, Noor Jamal Sheikh and Rajkumar Vishwas, were apprehended for committing a series of thefts across the region. The police recovered over Rs1 crore worth of jewellery and cash, along with two illegal pistols, during their arrest.
The suspects, originally from West Bengal, had been operating in Noida while living in Gurgaon. According to DCP (Noida) Rambadan Singh, a police team led by ACP Praveen Singh was conducting a routine vehicle check at Shashi Chowk in Sector 39 when they spotted the suspects on a bike. Upon signaling them to stop, the suspects attempted to flee towards Agahpur village.
The suspects led the police on a chase into the forested area of Sector 42, where they opened fire on the officers. In the ensuing gunfight, Noor Jamal Sheikh sustained injuries. Both suspects were then taken into custody. Police also seized the pistols, along with the stolen jewellery, cash, and tools used to break into houses.
Further investigation revealed that Sheikh and Vishwas had been carrying out similar crimes for several years, using information gathered from domestic workers and laundrymen to target vacant homes. They would break into these houses, steal cash and jewellery, and use their pistols to intimidate anyone who came in their way. A portion of their loot was reportedly shared with their informants.
The police have connected the duo to at least eight other theft cases in multiple states, including Haryana. Authorities have announced a Rs25,000 reward for their capture, and additional criminal charges may follow as investigations unfold.
According to Additional DCP Manish Kumar Mishra, the suspects’ history of criminal activity stretches beyond Noida, with more thefts coming to light. They have also revealed the involvement of a local goldsmith who was allegedly buying the stolen goods. The police are now pursuing action under the Gangster Act against the accused and continuing their investigation.
