Basistha Police in Guwahati have successfully dismantled an interlinked snatching racket with the arrest of two habitual offenders, Nitai Sarkar and Rupam Ali. The arrests follow a complaint filed on May 11, 2025, by a resident from Karbi Anglong, who had her handbag snatched near the State Guest House at Khanapara. The bag contained valuable items, including a POCO mobile phone, a PAN card, and Rs. 2,000 in cash.
Acting quickly, Basistha Police tracked down Nitai Sarkar (24) within 24 hours of the complaint. The police found Sarkar in possession of the stolen yellow Honda Grazia scooty (Reg. No. AS01-EN-9775), which had been reported stolen earlier in April. Along with the scooty, officers recovered three mobile phones, a ladies’ handbag, ATM cards, and the clothing worn during the crime. Sarkar confessed to multiple snatching incidents in the city, including those under Dispur Police Station’s jurisdiction, such as the cases in Suraj Nagar and Jayanagar.
The investigation took a major turn when Sarkar led authorities to Rupam Ali (20), his associate, who was arrested on May 13, 2025, from Arya Nagar. Ali, a repeat offender, had a black TVS NTORQ 125 scooty (Reg. No. AS01GB0648) in his possession, along with an Oppo mobile phone, the clothing he wore during the crime, and a scooty key.
This joint operation by Basistha Police and Bhangagarh Police has successfully recovered multiple stolen items and revealed a well-coordinated snatching operation. Authorities continue to investigate further to ensure all culprits are apprehended and brought to justice.
