HERNANDO COUNTY, FL – The executive officer of the Hernando Builder’s Association, Nita Hope Beckwith Melaugh, has been arrested and charged with grand theft, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation began on February 28, after the association reported suspicious activity involving unauthorized personal use of organizational funds by Melaugh, 57, a seven-year employee.

Detectives found that between January 1, 2023, and November 2024, Melaugh allegedly spent $43,952.91 of the association’s funds on personal expenses, including online clothing purchases, medical co-pays, and other unrelated services.

Melaugh voluntarily appeared at the sheriff’s office on August 7, where she gave a statement attempting to explain the questionable transactions linked to her personal accounts.

She was subsequently arrested and booked into the Hernando County Detention Center, facing one count of grand theft. Melaugh was held without bond pending her initial court appearance.

The Hernando Builder’s Association has cooperated fully with investigators, authorities said.
