In a major breakthrough, the Assam Police, with support from the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate, arrested Nirup Sundar Choudhury from Niladri Vihar, Bhubaneswar in connection with a Rs3 crore mining fraud.

The arrest stems from a case registered at Bihubor Police Station in Assam’s Sivasagar district. Choudhury is one of three key individuals accused of misappropriating profits from illegal coal sales.

The alleged scam was uncovered after a businessman named Dushmant, who was jailed under what turned out to be a false complaint filed by the trio, discovered the fraudulent activity following his release. According to investigators, Choudhury, along with Samir Patnaik and Sunil Sahoo, sold coal mined from an Assam-based site during Dushmant’s imprisonment.

While Choudhury has now been taken into custody, both Patnaik and Sahoo managed to evade police during a recent raid and remain on the run.

Authorities revealed that repeated summons to the accused were ignored, forcing them to coordinate a cross-state operation in Odisha. The case has since raised broader concerns about organized fraud networks operating across state lines and the manipulation of legal loopholes for personal benefit.

Investigations are ongoing, and the Assam Police have urged citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious financial activities.
