In a swift operation, East Khasi Hills police arrested five individuals, including the prime accused Nironton Tangsong (24) of Mawryngkang, for their involvement in bike thefts across Sunny Hills, 3rd Mile, and Upper Shillong.
Two bikes were stolen early Tuesday morning, prompting police night patrols to set up checkpoints throughout the region. One of the stolen bikes was recovered abandoned in Sangmein, while the other was intercepted in Pynursla, where Tangsong was caught attempting to flee. Another suspect managed to escape the naka (checkpoint).
Following Tangsong’s arrest, the Special Police Cell launched a follow-up operation and detained four more individuals:
Pius Talang (19) – Pyrdiwah
Lovingstar Surong (18) – Pynursla
Balajied Mawiong (19) – Sohlong, Pynursla
Banpynskhem Mukhim (19) – Pynursla
Police say the group is responsible for multiple bike lifting incidents across the district, and further investigation is underway to trace additional stolen vehicles and potential accomplices.
Authorities praised the coordinated efforts of the patrol units and special cell, noting the importance of community vigilance in combating such crimes.
