The Jorasanko Police arrested Nikhat Parveen, a 55-year-old domestic help, and detained her daughter, Mamata alias Baby Begum (30), in connection with the theft of valuable ancestral and antique jewelry and cash worth approximately Rs1 crore from a central Kolkata residence last Saturday.
The theft was reported by Tito Tarafdar, 66, a resident of Biplabi Anukul Chandra Street, concerning his ancestral property at Marcus Square. The crime came to light on July 26 when 85-year-old Bithika Nandi, who resides at the property, discovered several precious family heirlooms missing.
The stolen items included an antique diamond necklace, diamond earrings, two diamond bracelets, three pairs of gold earrings studded with small diamonds, and Rs1,17,000 in cash. The family, known for their music instrument shop in Lalbazar, also owns multiple properties across the city.
After the complaint, police swiftly arrested Nikhat Parveen within 48 hours. Her daughter Mamata has been detained for questioning. Both women had worked for the family for over 15 years and were considered among the most trusted outsiders.
During interrogation, the accused admitted to selling part of the stolen valuables. “We have recovered around 70% of the antique jewelry,” said a police officer. Notably, some of the jewelry was reportedly purchased in England by the family’s forefathers.
