An 18-year-old has been indicted on murder charges in connection with a deadly January shooting in Elizabeth City, according to police.
Nijal Maurice Nelson was charged with two counts of murder and one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon in the Jan. 22 shooting deaths of 19-year-old Jamari Taylor Takeo Johnson of Hertford and 17-year-old Damarion Armstrong of Elizabeth City.
Elizabeth City Police Chief Eddie Graham said detectives presented evidence to a Pasquotank County Grand Jury on Feb. 16, resulting in indictments against Nelson. He was later arrested.
However, police also stated Nelson is considered armed and dangerous and may still be in the Elizabeth City area. Authorities are urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact the Elizabeth City Police Department.
Officers from the Elizabeth City Police Department, the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, and campus police at Elizabeth City State University responded to the 500 block of Edge Street shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 22. Two victims were found dead at the scene.
Chief Graham described the shooting as an isolated incident but emphasized the investigation remains ongoing.
“This is not a closed case,” Graham said. “We’re continuing the investigation until this case is prosecuted in court.”
