PALGHAR, MAHARASHTRA: In a major anti-drug operation, Maharashtra police arrested a Nigerian national in Virar for possession of 57 grams of Methadone, a potent synthetic opioid, valued at approximately Rs11.4 lakh in the illegal drug market.
The accused has been identified as Yakub Gaffar Olasunkami, aged 54. He was detained near Global City in Virar, under Palghar district, after his suspicious behavior drew the attention of the Anti-Narcotics Cell.
During a search, officers discovered methadone hidden in a concealed compartment, police said.
“A case has been filed under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The investigation is ongoing to uncover the wider drug supply network,” said Commissioner of Police Madan Ballal.
Officials believe the arrest is part of a larger trafficking ring, and efforts are underway to identify local distributors and buyers. Police are also verifying Olasunkami’s immigration status and prior activity in India.
