29-year-old Nicholas J. Normile of Fort Ann has been charged with criminally negligent homicide following a fatal crash that occurred in January 2025, according to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Normile was initially arrested in August 2024 for driving while impaired by drugs and grand larceny. He is accused of stealing a motor vehicle valued at over $3,000 from a relative. While driving the stolen vehicle, Normile collided with another car on Tripoli Road in the Town of Fort Ann.

The crash severely injured the operator of the other vehicle, 75-year-old Merrilee Howard of Fort Ann, who was transported to Albany Medical Center. Unfortunately, Howard passed away days later from her injuries.

Following an investigation by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, a charge of criminally negligent homicide was filed against Normile in January 2025. Normile is scheduled to appear in Washington County Court at a later date.
