Nicholas Hughes, a prolific thief who stole over £23,000 worth of valuables from lockers at high-end hotels, gyms, and health centres across the UK, has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison.
The 51-year-old, from Guilsborough Road, Coventry, carried out 14 thefts over a 16-month period starting in February 2023. Hughes targeted various luxury facilities, stealing items such as watches, bank cards, and jewellery from unsuspecting victims as they exercised or enjoyed spa services.
In addition to the thefts, Hughes fraudulently used the stolen debit and credit cards, defrauding his victims of more than £18,000.
The investigation into Hughes began in June 2024 after a series of high-value items were stolen from a locker at the Craxton Wood Hotel and Spa in Chester. A watch, bank cards, and a driving license were taken from the locker, and the cards were later used for fraudulent transactions in Ellesmere Port.
Detectives quickly identified Hughes as the prime suspect and discovered he was wanted for similar crimes in locations across the UK. A nationwide manhunt was launched, and Hughes was arrested at Bath Railway Station on 10 July, 2024.
Hughes pleaded guilty to 14 counts of theft, amounting to £23,495, and 12 counts of fraud, totaling £18,012. The crimes took place in several cities, including Liverpool, Preston, Chichester, Plymouth, and Kent.
At sentencing, DC Mike Rogers, from Cheshire Police, stated: “Hughes is a prolific offender who deliberately targeted luxury facilities. His actions caused distress to his victims, many of whom lost valuable and sentimental items that can never be replaced. His lengthy prison sentence reflects the severity of his behaviour.”
Hughes’ conviction serves as a reminder of the consequences for those who target vulnerable individuals at leisure facilities, stealing both valuables and peace of mind.
