NEWTON, Ohio (WKRC) – The Newtown Police Department has arrested two individuals in connection with an investigation into illegal activities at the VIP Smoke Shop. The arrests were made following multiple complaints of underage sales and reports of products causing illness among customers.

Abdalah Ezzuldin Jararweh, 29, the shop owner, and Leen Hani Sabri Abu Saideh, 30, an employee, have both been charged with trafficking in marijuana, a fifth-degree felony. In addition to the marijuana trafficking charge, Abu Saideh faces a charge for the sale of tobacco products to individuals under 21, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.

Authorities have indicated that more charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

Tom Synan, with the Newtown Police Department, stressed the importance of businesses adhering to the law: “We support the legal right to operate such stores, but they have some simple rules to follow—don’t sell to who you are not supposed to and sell the products you’re supposed to. As with any business, it is the responsibility of the owner and those that work in these stores to ensure compliance.”

This marks the second time complaints have been lodged, investigations conducted, and arrests made at the VIP Smoke Shop, even after a change in ownership.

Authorities have issued a reminder that individuals under the age of 21 are prohibited from purchasing or possessing tobacco or vape products unless accompanied by a parent, spouse, or guardian who is 21 or older. Synan added, “We will be watching and enforcing those underage that use this location.”
