AMSTERDAM — A Montgomery County senior citizen was scammed out of $40,000, but law enforcement’s quick action led to the arrest of the alleged perpetrator when they sought additional funds, New York State Police confirmed.

The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Zixiong Wang of Flushing, was apprehended Tuesday as he arrived at a prearranged location in Amsterdam to collect the further money. He faces charges of third-degree attempted grand larceny and fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The investigation began when the elderly victim reported the scam on Sunday, detailing how they had been tricked through an elaborate scheme. In November, the victim received an email claiming they had purchased cryptocurrency. Following the email’s instructions, the victim called the customer service number provided. The caller then manipulated the elderly person, falsely claiming their online activity was being “watched” and that they were a victim of fraud.

Over several days, the suspect demanded money from the victim, resulting in a loss of more than $40,000. On the second day after the initial report, Wang attempted to collect even more money. He was arrested by police before receiving the additional funds.

Upon his arrest, Wang was found in possession of cocaine. Investigators also discovered that he was wanted in Delaware for similar crimes involving elderly victims.

Wang was arraigned and is being held without bail. Authorities are urging the public to be cautious of such scams, which have been on the rise throughout New York State.

State Police recommend that anyone who believes they have been a victim of financial fraud contact their bank immediately using a phone number they have verified themselves and avoid using any phone numbers provided in suspicious communications.
