BRANFORD, Conn. — A 31-year-old man from Fresh Meadows, New York, has been arrested for his involvement in a scheme that sends unsolicited “Hello” text messages, which have been linked to scams targeting unsuspecting individuals in Connecticut.
Branford police arrested Wenije He on Friday after he traveled to Connecticut as a courier to collect a substantial amount of cash believed to be connected to criminal activities. Authorities explained that this scam often begins with text messages that simply say “Hello,” aiming to initiate conversations and create fake online relationships. Once trust is established, scammers manipulate victims into sending money.
He is currently facing charges of larceny and phone fraud, with a bond set at $200,000. Police are actively working to identify and locate others involved in this scam.
Residents are urged to be cautious and ignore unsolicited text messages, especially those starting with “Hello” from unknown numbers. Police also warned that messages sent by mistake may also be traps; scammers often hope victims will respond with “Sorry, wrong number,” which can lead to further manipulation.
