HEWLETT, NY — Melissa Maldonado, 19, of New Jersey, and an underage boy were arrested Wednesday in connection with an attempted grand larceny in Hewlett, according to Nassau County police.

At approximately 6:30 a.m., officers responded to a home on Seawane Road after receiving a call about a stolen vehicle attempt. Police say an underage boy attempted to steal a running car but jumped into a white Hyundai when the car’s owner confronted him outside. The vehicle was driven by Maldonado, who was then pursued and apprehended by officers.

Authorities also noted that Maldonado’s 11-month-old son was in the back seat of the vehicle during the incident. The infant was unharmed and later released to a family member.

Maldonado faces charges of attempted grand larceny and endangering the welfare of a child. She is scheduled for arraignment on Thursday in Hempstead. The juvenile was charged with attempted grand larceny.
