Nerul Police in Navi Mumbai have claimed to have solved at least five burglary cases with the arrest of an Assam resident who allegedly flew to Mumbai specifically to commit thefts.
Authorities seized gold and silver jewellery valued at Rs 12.5 lakh from 33-year-old Mohinul Abdul Malik Islam, a native of Hojai district in Assam, a police official reported Wednesday.
The investigation began after a resident of Sarsole village in Sector 6, Nerul, reported the theft of jewellery worth Rs 4.95 lakh from her home on September 4. A special police team was formed to probe this and other recent thefts.
Using CCTV footage and technical evidence, Islam was identified as the prime suspect. The investigation revealed that he would fly to Mumbai solely to commit burglaries and then return to Assam immediately.
After careful surveillance, police tracked him to the Masjid Bundar area in Mumbai and arrested him on Tuesday. Upon interrogation, Islam reportedly confessed to his involvement in the Nerul burglary as well as several other thefts across Navi Mumbai.
So far, five burglary cases have been solved following his arrest, with further investigations ongoing.
