A 32-year-old Croatian man, Nebojsa Pap, has been sent forward to stand trial for the alleged murder of his mother, Mirjana Pap, during a violent incident at their Athlone home late last year. The case will proceed to the Central Criminal Court following a brief hearing at Athlone District Court.
Pap, of Beechville, Athlone, Co Westmeath, is accused of murdering his mother and producing an axe during the fatal confrontation on December 28, 2024. He appeared in court wearing a grey jumper and black tracksuit bottoms, flanked by three prison officers.
Garda Olivia Connolly testified under oath that the book of evidence was served on Pap shortly before 2 p.m. The charges include murder and the production of an article—specifically an axe—capable of causing serious injury.
Sgt Paul McNally confirmed that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed Pap be sent forward for trial at the next sittings of the Central Criminal Court.
Pap’s solicitor, Ciara Macklin, said her client was not seeking bail, as only the High Court can consider bail in murder cases. She also successfully applied for legal aid, which will cover both junior and senior counsel.
During the hearing, Judge Bernadette Owens issued an alibi warning, instructing Pap to notify the prosecution within 14 days if he intends to use any alibi evidence during the trial.
The body of 61-year-old Mirjana Pap, a widow and mother of three, was discovered near Clonark, Co Roscommon—about 10 km from Athlone—on December 30, 2024. She had been reported missing two days earlier. Ms. Pap had lived in Athlone for several years and previously worked at the Athlone accommodation centre.
Pap remains in custody and is due to appear before the Central Criminal Court at a later date.
