PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – Two men are in custody after a high-speed vehicle chase in Philadelphia on Friday night, during which police officers were fired upon.

Authorities say officers in an unmarked vehicle observed a car traveling the wrong way down a one-way street. The vehicle then ran a stop sign near the 5400 block of Morse Street and fled the scene, prompting a police pursuit.

During the chase, the passenger—identified as 30-year-old Nathaniel Smith—allegedly opened fire on the pursuing officers. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The pursuit ended when the vehicle came to a stop, and both Smith and the driver, 35-year-old Khalil Flowers, attempted to flee on foot. Officers quickly apprehended them.

A search of the vehicle revealed packaged drugs, including crack cocaine and marijuana, along with a 9mm handgun and spent shell casings.

Smith is currently being held on more than $1 million bail, while Flowers is held on $500,000 bail. Authorities say a third suspect remains at large.

Police are continuing their investigation.
