Nathan Billups, Rome Freeman Arrested for Organized Retail Theft

Both face Class B felony for alleged pool swap scam

by Sophia Bennett

Two Alexander City men, Nathan Billups, 61, and Rome Bernard Freeman Jr., 41, were arrested on July 14 and charged with organized retail theft, a Class B felony.

Court documents state the men purchased a Coleman 18-foot pool and loaded it into a truck. They then returned to the store with a receipt and exchanged the purchased pool for a second one of the same make and model, leaving the store with both pools without paying for the second item.

Both Billups and Freeman were released on the day of their arrests after posting bonds of $15,000 each.
