In a swift breakthrough, police arrested Nandu, the prime accused in the murder of Sunil Kumar, a labourer residing in Khokhra village, Pinjore. Sunil had been missing since May 3 and was later found dead, sparking a murder investigation.
Sunil’s wife, Nanni Devi, originally from Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh, had been living with her husband and family in rented accommodation for the past month. Sunil worked as a labourer at a plot near the Baddi Truck Union under contractor Ajay Mistri.
On the morning of May 3, Sunil left for work but didn’t return. His wife grew concerned and asked her brother-in-law, Nanne Singh, to call him. The call connected briefly with only a “hello” before disconnecting. The phone was switched off afterward.
The next day, Nanni Devi, along with her son and brother-in-law, went to Sunil’s workplace. There, a driver named Happy told them that Sunil had left work the previous evening at 6:30 pm with a co-worker named Nandu. Later, Sunil’s son-in-law received a video showing a dead body. Based on the clothing and facial features, Nanni Devi identified the body as her husband’s. Formal identification was confirmed at Civil Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula.
Suspecting foul play, Nanni Devi accused Nandu, who was last seen with Sunil. Police arrested Nandu, son of Reet Singh, a native of Bareilly currently living in Pritam Colony, Madawala. During the arrest, they recovered Sunil’s mobile phone, blood-stained trousers, and the knife allegedly used in the crime.
Sub-Inspector Pradeep Kumar, in charge of the Madawala outpost, revealed that Nandu was estranged from his wife and had been ridiculed by Sunil over the issue. After both consumed alcohol on the day of the incident, Nandu fatally stabbed Sunil in a fit of rage.
The accused has been booked under Section 25(1)(b) of the Arms Act and Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He has been remanded to Ambala Central Jail following a court appearance.
