Kolhapur: An artisan, Najibulla Auladali Sheikh, accused of stealing gold jewellery from a shop in the Gujari area of Kolhapur city, was arrested by police within 24 hours of the complaint.
Najibulla Sheikh, originally from West Bengal, worked at the shop where the theft occurred. The shop owner registered a complaint on Monday at the Juna Rajwada police station.
Inspector Ravindra Kalamkar stated, “We immediately launched an investigation and found that the accused had traveled to Pune’s Ravivar Peth area. Learning he was planning to return to his home state, we deployed a team promptly and arrested him. We recovered 200 grams of gold jewellery worth Rs 18 lakh from him.”
This case is notable as in the past, skilled migrant artisans working in Gujari have been suspected of stealing gold jewellery provided to them for designing purposes, but were often not apprehended. This is the first time the police have made such a swift arrest.
