In a significant crackdown on narcotics, Nagpur Police apprehended 24 suspects involved in the sale and consumption of ganja (marijuana) at the Telipura Electronics Market in Sitabuldi. The operation, led by Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal, also resulted in the seizure of ganja and five two-wheelers used by the drug dealers.
The action came after a formal complaint from the Electronics Market Shopkeepers’ Association, which had raised concerns about rampant drug activities disrupting business and public safety. According to the association, drug peddlers were causing public disturbances, especially in narrow lanes, with many arriving on two-wheelers.
Despite previous complaints, local police had failed to take adequate action, which led the association to escalate the issue to the commissioner. Singal, taking charge of the situation, oversaw investigations through the Crime Branch and initiated proactive measures to curb the drug menace.
The investigation revealed that a peddler had been openly selling ganja in a three-foot-wide lane in Telipura, frequented by addicts. Senior PI Vithal Rajput of the Sitabuldi police station, under the supervision of DCP (Zone 2) Rahul Madne, spearheaded the operation. The main suspect, Snehal Lakhanlal Chaurasia, aged 39, was caught red-handed with ganja stored in two containers. Several others were detained for being intoxicated.
The police operation revealed lapses in earlier inspections, as previous local police checks had failed to detect the illegal activity. The raid was a significant victory for the area, with shopkeepers and residents expressing relief. CP Singal conducted an unannounced visit to the Sitabuldi police station to assess the case and made it clear that any officer involved in collusion would be suspended.
Following this high-profile bust, CP Singal emphasized that negligence in acting on credible intelligence would result in strict disciplinary actions. The operation marks a strong statement from the Nagpur police in their commitment to combat the growing drug trade and restore safety to commercial districts. The investigation continues as the authorities look to uncover any wider drug networks in the region.
